The Seventh Edition of Pipeline Rules of Thumb Handbook is an excellent resource. It is a manual of quick, accurate solutions to everyday pipeline engineering problems. A quick recap of the table of contents lists: General Information (such as basic formulas, math, pressure ratings and more), Cables and Ropes, Belts and Shafts, Pipeline Pigging, Drill sizes for Pipe Taps, Right-of-Way, Concrete Work, Ditching, Welding, Pipe Laying, Pipe Design, Electrical Design, Hydrostatic Testing, Pipeline Drying, Control Valves, Corrosion/Coatings, Gas (general, compression, hydraulics), Liquids, Pumps, Measurement, Instrumentation, Leak Detection, Tanks, Maintenance, Economics, Rehab and much more. This book should be on the shelf of any pipeline professional.

5 out of 5 stars Up to Date and Very Useful   August 21, 2009

I got this book for a very good friend who is an engineer. He was given the task of wiring and mounting the lighting fixtures for a high school baseball field near our home and he told me the section on floodlighting concepts really saved his bacon. I told him he was just being polite and he answered by telling me that he was telling me true, he really used the book.

He said that it covers a wide range of rules and formulas that deal with a whole plethora of things, he actually used that word in a sentence "plethora", a city planner might request of him. He said that the book was up to date and very useful.

5 out of 5 stars Be All and End All of Pipeline Engineering   January 29, 2010

I had three semesters of calculus in college, two semesters of physics, two of chemistry, several geology classes. I took those classes because at one time I thought maybe I'd like to be a geologist, go all over the world looking for oil. But I got interested in other stuff, wound up studying other stuff and sort of left the sciences behind. So when I got a chance to review this tome, and it is a tome, I thought I had the background for it. I don't.

This is a book of charts, tables & formulas. If you're an engineer, then I can see where this book is a must have. I can see if I ever would have stuck with geology, this book would have been a must have. Some of the pages did take me back to those difficult classes, made me remember how hard staying up all night and studying for those exams was.

This certainly a five star book and I wouldn't be surprised if it's used as a textbook, it has that kind of feel to it. If you do the kind of work that requires this kind of knowledge, even with my limited background, I can see where this book would be a big help. It's obvious to me, even with a cursory glance through this book, and I gave it much more than that, that this is the be all and the end all of pipeline engineering.

5 out of 5 stars Contents of the Pipelines Handbook   August 22, 2009

This is for anyone interested in issues involved in pipelines such as those involved in chemical plant design and petroleum industries, for example. This would benefit engineers, operators, contractors, and business men involved in pipeline design.

This book is easy to use and reference and also has many worked out examples from corresponding sections to study off of. The examples are exceedingly helpful since it refreshes what was learned in the past. Sometimes it may be difficult or time consuming to find similar problems in textbooks let alone examples that may have been learned years ago. The book essentially guides you through some theory and sets up formulas in a systematic fashion by defining terms, units, giving rules and general procedures for many calculations. Some sample calculations are also included.

There is also a glossary provided of technical terms and concepts where they are needed. There are also some sample cases that give realistic examples of situations faced in chemical plants or chemical processes. Procedures are given for these sample cases.

Tips and practical troubleshooting is also included such as selection of flow meters, leak detection, general pipeline maintenance, pumps and compressor considerations and recommendations, corrosion considerations like cathodic protection and galvanic anodes, control valves, measurement of energy and mass flow, construction, electrical considerations, equipment testing, and much more. As can be expected, Fluid mechanics, related thermodynamics, and related chemical phenomena are treated well through the text and will definitely remind pipeline designers of the essentials for pipeline design. If I ever end up working in a chemical plant, this will surely come in handy.

Here are the Chapter titles and some stuff found in those chapters (note - the book discusses more than what I mention and my treatment here will be general and minimal):

1) General Information : basic mathematics, ASTM Standards of reinforcing bars, cables and ropes considerations, belts and shafts considerations, pipeline pegging

2) Construction : planning, right-of-way, ditching, concrete labor, pipe bending adjusting, pipe lowering, general welding, pipeline welding

3) Pipe Design : properties of pipes

4) Electrical Design : National Electrical Code tables, resistance of copper wires, floodlighting concepts

5) Hydrostatic Testing : benefits and limitations, volume of water for test section, compressibility factor of water

6) Pipeline Drying : dewatering, cleaning, drying

7) Control Valves : relief valve sizing, selection, installation, and testing; sizing valves for vapors and gases

8) Corrosions/ Coatings : cathodic protection, coating calculations, calculating voltage drop in ground beds, HVDC effects, locating coating defects, measuring unwanted alternating current, induced AC voltages as hazardous, current interference from outside source

9) Gas-General : calculating gas properties, selecting energy measuring equipment

10) Gas-Compression : compressors, centrifugal compressor data

11) Gas-Hydraulics : finding leakage from pressure drops, multi-phase flow, practical gas flow calculations

12) Liquids-General : general liquid property calculations, viscosities of hydrocarbon liquids

13) Liquids-Hydraulics : CALM and SALM systems, general marine hose data, pressure loss via valves and fittings, sizing crude oil lines

14) Pumps : pulsation control for reciprocating pumps, centrifugal pump considerations, rotary screw pumps

15) Measurement : liquid and gas measurements, orifice meter

16) Instrumentation : valves, acoustic line break detectors, cathodic protection, "smart" pressure detectors, choosing right technology for SCADA communications

17) Leak Detection : techniques, simple systems, economic aspects of leaks, computer monitoring, leak phenomena, pipeline modeling equations

18) Tanks : vapor loss from internal floating roof tanks, estimating contents of horizontal cylinder tanks, vertical cylinder tanks

19) Maintenance : studies, planning, immediate response and flexible actions, planing for oil spills, training

20) Economics : time value, estimating construction costs, controlling irregular cash flow, criteria for investments and financial projects, sensitivity analysis, comparing costs of fuels for operation, estimate pipeline cost based on 1994 data

21) Rehabilitation-risk Evaluation : inspection criteria

22) Conversion Factors

The fact that this book has examples, solutions, and sample cases means that it is a better handbook than other handbooks since others which cover some related topics such as Handbook of Corrosion Engineering do not put in much of worked out examples which can speed up the understanding. Many times scientists and engineers learn faster just by looking at an example of an applied equation.

This handbook works well with any calculator or calculating tool such as Microsoft Excel or MATLAB or the one used in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful for a Lot of Upper Division Work   August 21, 2009

Sara and I ordered copies of this book for some friends who are grad students taking civil engineering classes. They said that it's very handy for a lot of upper division work. They were impressed with the clear mathematics and efficient layout and although this was not a required text for any of their classes, they find that it's very helpful.
